Finding My Path
My journey into computing began at Nottingham Trent University, where I pursued a BSc (Hons) in Information and Communications Technology. This period laid the groundwork for everything that followed.
Key Achievements
- First Class Honours – Graduated with distinction
- BCS Prize for Outstanding Performance – Awarded by the British Computer Society for academic excellence
- Developed foundational skills in programming, web development, and systems analysis
Final Year Project
My final year project was a cognitive testing centre for the SHAPE research group. Supervised by Dr Robert Ransom, I built a web-based platform that allowed cognitive testing technology to be deployed in local schools and organisations—bringing lab-quality assessment tools into real-world settings.
Formative Experiences
The web-based modules were where I found my passion, learning to build interactive applications that solved real problems. The Practical Project Management module was equally formative—not just for the management skills, but for a project that sparked my interest in geospatial computing.
For the PPM module, our team produced an open day experience and interactive map of the NTU campus, featuring live events and dynamic features. This was my first taste of building location-aware, user-facing applications—a theme that would define my research career.
Looking Back
These three years transformed me from a curious student into someone genuinely excited about the possibilities of computing. The BCS prize was validation, but more importantly, it gave me confidence to pursue postgraduate studies at a research-intensive university.
