A New Chapter
Moving from Nottingham Trent to the University of Nottingham marked a significant step in my academic journey. The MSc in Computer Science provided the theoretical depth and research exposure I needed.
Academic Excellence
- Distinction
- Specialised in data visualisation, design ethnography, and software engineering
- First exposure to cutting-edge research methods and academic writing
MSc Dissertation: FinVis
My dissertation, FinVis: Visualizing the Complex Nature of Financial Markets, was supervised by Dr Robert Laramee. I developed a web-based application for exploratory visual analysis of financial data—enabling investors to query over 500 stocks and generate interactive, customizable visualizations to discover well-priced investments.
This project combined my web development skills with emerging interests in interactive data visualization and user-centred design.
Formative Modules
- Design Ethnography and Data Visualisation – Understanding how users interact with visual information
- Data Visualisation Project – Hands-on application of visualization principles
- Software Engineering Management – Bridging technical and organizational perspectives
Research Experience
Alongside my MSc, I continued working with the Smart Sensing Lab at NTU, developing research skills that would prove essential for doctoral study. This dual engagement kept me connected to applied sensing research while deepening my theoretical foundations.
The Bridge to Research
When I saw internal advertising for the Horizon CDT PhD programme, I knew it was the right next step. The MSc confirmed that academia was where I wanted to be, and I was fortunate to secure a fully-funded position.
